What's it like to be a Process Engineer?
Process Engineers commonly work at manufacturing, chemical and biotechnological plants. They are responsible for maintaining the safety and efficiency of the systems that run a plant’s operations. Process Engineers constantly analyse current systems and test, optimise and redesign systems for improvement.
Tasks and duties
- Evaluating current systems to meet industry safety and quality standards.
- Monitoring systems to gather, analyse and report data.
- Conducting research and development to create improved systems.
- Designing new equipment and systems backed by research.
- Presenting solutions and recommendations to management.
- Budgeting and scheduling new projects.
How to become a Process Engineer
A degree in engineering is required for this role. Engineers must register with the Professional Engineers board. Employers may prefer jobseekers with a relevant postgraduate degree and years of experience.
Graduate with a bachelor degree in chemical engineering, biotechnology or mechanical engineering.
Complete an engineering internship at a manufacturing facility to gain experience. You could also build experience in a hands-on manufacturing role to learn how machines and systems operate.
Register as a professional engineer with the Singapore Professional Engineers Board. Applicants must show proof of a degree in engineering and work experience. In addition, you’ll need to pass the oral and written examinations in Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FEE) and Practice of Professional Engineering Examination (PPE).
